The Books: True Prep / Official Preppy Handbook; Go Faux: necklace / earrings / ring; Go Pro: necklace / sweater / ring; Go For Broke: necklace / earrings / ring; The Watches: gold / silver
Whatever my own opinions on prep-dom (mixed and strong, like a good drink), I completely concur with Lisa Birnbach’s chosen accessories–pearls are polished and practical, which means you’ll wear yours forever, and then hand them along to your favorite guy or gal of the next generation. Best of all, your options in the pearl world really are endless: Coco Chanel wore faux, so these inexpensive glass studs are clearly a go–I always keep an eye out at thrift stores and garage sales for vintage strands to pile on top of t-shirts. I also have strong streak of goofy, avant-garde affinity (formed in the ’90s, what can you do) to push past prim: the cheeky elegance of this tangled necklace and reversible ring take this look to the next level. Of course, if money’s no issue, the sky’s the limit with beautiful baubles, and you really can’t go wrong. Just make sure the metals match your watch (or don’t–mixed metals just happen to boggle my mind).
So, prep or no, are you pro-pearl? Or is the whole thing passé?
Why not share the love?

the mmm rings are gorgeous in person. fit the finger perfectly.
As if I wasn’t already desperate for one! Is there anything that man can’t do?
As a self-professed prep, I’m definitely in the pro-pearl camp. My Tiffany studs go with me on every trip and are the only real accessory that I feel I “need.” I don’t accessorize much besides that, though.
Also, I liked your reference to having feelings that were strong and mixed about it.
Quite apropos.
When I’m trying to look serious, my pearls are my go-to bijoux.
Prep is such a weird thing, and people are so weird about it. Glad you liked my little joke.
