What with yesterday’s pronouncement of continued winter and today’s sparkling snow fall, brightly colored coats seem especially apropos. Now, in the interest of full-confession, I have to tell you that I am, shall we say, obsessed with vintage coats (and that may be putting it mildly). I’ve the had the very good fortune to acquire a few particularly lovely ones over the course of the last year, the result of which is that I just want more, and I think the illustration above pretty much makes the case for me – I mean, truly, could the cuts be any more flattering? And long, full skirts and ample collars are practically guaranteed to keep you warm (an essential component in a coat, I think). The attention to detail also tends to blow me away (I promise, there are posts coming to share my burgeoning collection and offer tips on buying vintage coats). Granted, the coats above are meant for that time between seasons when you want something a little lighter, a little brighter, and with fewer furry details,* but they’re no less the lovely for it, and such classic silhouettes could easily support any material you might desire of them – which, incidentally, is entirely the point: this is an ad in a Mexican women’s magazine for sewing patterns, if you can believe it! I’m not sure I’m up to the tasking of making my own coats, but I wouldn’t mind finding something along the lines of the red or the green one, especially in such a cheery hue. Am I alone in this? Are any of you all about the allure of colorful vintage, or do you prefer a more modern, possibly less blinding style?
